The First Agents of Change Conference at Essex University Business School
The very first Agents of Change Conference at Essex University Business School was an unforgettable celebration of creativity, courage and pupil voice, bringing together children from across the Tiptree and Stanway Consortium for a day that truly felt like something special.
Set within the impressive surroundings of Essex University’s Business School, pupils had the opportunity to explore university spaces and experience learning in a completely new environment. From the moment they arrived, there was a real sense of excitement in the air. This wasn’t just a school trip — it was a celebration of everything the children have achieved through their Agents of Change projects.
The day was packed with inspiring experiences designed to motivate, challenge and energise every pupil involved. One of the highlights was a powerful and engaging talk from Will Hussy of The Art of Brilliance, who encouraged children to think positively, believe in themselves and recognise the impact they can have on others. His message set the tone for a day full of confidence, ambition and big thinking.
Creativity took centre stage during a sustainable fashion workshop, where pupils explored how everyday materials can be transformed into something extraordinary. Using newspapers kindly donated by the Colchester Gazette, the children designed and modelled outfits for their very own fashion show. The excitement and pride on display as pupils cheered each other on made this a standout moment of the day, showing just how powerful imagination and teamwork can be.
Environmental learning came to life in a hands-on workshop led by television presenter and educator Lee Connelly, the Skinny Jean Gardener. Pupils discovered practical ways to help the environment while making wildflower seed bombs and learning about the importance of nature. One of the most memorable moments was their brave encounter with a ‘bee’, which sparked curiosity, excitement and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. It was learning in its most engaging and unforgettable form.
The energy didn’t stop there. Pupils also took part in basketball sessions led by coaches from the Essex Rebels, where teamwork, movement and fun came together on the court. The enthusiasm was infectious, with children fully immersed in the games and supporting one another throughout.
Perhaps the most powerful moment of the entire conference came at the end of the day, when every pupil was officially recognised as an Agents of Change Ambassador for their school. Each child was presented with an exclusive ambassador badge — a symbol of their commitment to making a difference in their schools, communities and beyond.
This conference was more than a celebration. It was a statement of belief in young people and their ability to lead change. It showed children that their ideas matter, their voices are valued, and their actions can have real impact.
For those lucky enough to attend, it was a day filled with inspiration, pride and possibility. And most importantly, it marked the beginning of something bigger — a growing community of young Agents of Change ready to take what they have learned and continue making a difference in the world around them.
