Year 5 Inspired by Nature at Abberton
At St Lawrence School, our Year 5 pupils have taken inspiration to a whole new level following their unforgettable visit to Essex Wildlife Trust’s Abberton Reservoir. What started as a school trip quickly grew into something much bigger… it was a visit that sparked ideas!
During their time at Abberton, pupils explored the beauty of the natural environment and learned about the important work carried out by Essex Wildlife Trust. From discovering local wildlife to understanding how habitats are protected, the experience left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
It didn’t take long before ideas began to flow. Back at school, Year 5 channelled their creativity into designing their very own postcards—all with the aim of raising money for the Trust. Working collaboratively, the children shared ideas and themes inspired by their visit, created eye-catching designs celebrating wildlife and nature and thought carefully about how their work could encourage others to support the cause. The result? Four fantastic postcard designs, each one unique and full of creativity.
The pupils didn’t stop at designing their postcards—they also took on the role of promoters! They created bold, informative posters to share all the key details, ensuring everyone in the school community knew about their project. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear how proud they were of what they had achieved. The postcards were made available within school and even at the Abberton Reservoir shop, helping to spread their message even further and raise awareness for such an important cause.
What makes this project so special is the purpose behind it. Every postcard was created not just as a piece of art, but as a way to support Essex Wildlife Trust and protect the natural world the children had come to appreciate so much during their visit. It’s a brilliant example of pupils taking their learning beyond the classroom—combining creativity, teamwork, and a real desire to make a difference.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 5 pupils. Their passion, creativity, and teamwork truly shine through in this project. From a single trip to Abberton Reservoir, they have created something meaningful, impactful, and inspiring—showing once again that when children are given the opportunity to lead, amazing things can happen.
