Transforming Our World

At St Lawrence Primary School, something exciting has been happening… and it’s proof that when children are given a voice, they can create real change! A group of pupils recently worked alongside the charity Global Action Plan on an inspiring project called Transform Our World. The aim? To look at our school environment and ask a powerful question: “What could we change to make our school a better place for everyone?” And the children didn’t just talk about ideas… they made them happen.

Working in groups, the children explored the school site and started spotting areas that could be improved. They discussed what they liked, what wasn’t working so well, and what would make school life better for everyone. Then came the real Agents of Change part - They researched their ideas, planned what they would need, worked out how to make it possible, and got organised. This wasn’t just a “nice idea” project — it was real teamwork, real responsibility, and real action.

One group had an amazing vision: they wanted to transform an area of the school into a calm and cosy space for reading outside. They noticed an outdoor bookshelf that looked a little sad and forgotten… and they decided it deserved a glow-up! So, they: painted the bookshelf to make it bright and inviting, added planters to bring colour and nature into the space, brought in bean bags to make it comfy and relaxing. And just like that, an ordinary area became an outdoor reading sanctuary — a space where children can enjoy books in the fresh air, surrounded by calm and creativity. It’s the perfect example of how small changes can make a big difference.

Another group focused on a different challenge: litter and waste around the school. They wanted children to have the tools and support to take better care of the school environment — not just adults doing it, but pupils being empowered too. Their solution? Practical, smart, and community-focused. They worked on introducing: litter pickers that children can use during break times, better recycling bins to make it easier to recycle properly. They weren’t just helping keep the school tidy — they were encouraging everyone to take pride in their surroundings and think about the impact of waste on the planet.

To make sure their hard work inspired others, the children took part in an assembly where they proudly shared their projects with the rest of the school. They explained what they wanted to change, why it mattered, how they researched their ideas, what actions they took and how everyone can help keep the momentum going. Standing up in front of the whole school and speaking with confidence takes courage — and they did it brilliantly.

This project wasn’t just about painting shelves or organising recycling. It was about something much bigger: children working together, listening to each other’s ideas, solving real problems, making their environment better, understanding they have the power to create change. That’s what being an Agent of Change is all about.

The pupils involved showed leadership, creativity, teamwork and determination — and the results will benefit the whole school community for a long time. We are so proud of the children who took part in Transform Our World with Global Action Plan. Their passion, commitment, and positive energy has made St Lawrence an even better place to learn and grow.

And who knows? If they can transform a bookshelf into a sanctuary and turn recycling into a school-wide mission… imagine what else they’ll change in the future. Because when children believe their voices matter, amazing things happen.
