Voices That Shone: Our Young Poets Take the Stage

What an unforgettable evening it was as pupils from Years 3 and 5 from St Lawrence School stepped onto the stage at the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Essex and delivered performances that left everyone bursting with pride.

The children took part in an inspiring poetry project and were invited to perform in front of an audience of around two hundred people. For many, it was a huge moment. Standing on a real theatre stage takes courage, confidence and determination, but our pupils rose to the challenge brilliantly.

Their poems were powerful, thoughtful and full of emotion. Each one was read beautifully, with clear voices, proud posture and a real sense of purpose. It was incredible to see how much the children had grown through the project, not only in their writing, but in their ability to communicate, perform and share their ideas with the world.

The atmosphere in the theatre was electric. There was excitement, nervous anticipation and then a wave of applause as each child finished their poem. It was a reminder of how inspiring it is when children are given the chance to express themselves and be heard.

It was also wonderful to be part of an event where schools came together to celebrate creativity. Every child who performed was amazing, and we felt genuinely humbled to be included in such a special evening.

A huge thank you to Essex Children’s University, the Essex Book Festival, the University of Essex and Eastside Educational Trust for creating such an unforgettable experience. We are still buzzing from the night and will treasure the memories for a long time.

Our poets showed the true spirit of Agents of Change. They used their voices with confidence, shared their thoughts with bravery, and proved that young people can inspire a whole room simply by speaking from the heart.
