Tiny Plots, Big Ideas: The Colchester Garden Festival

St Lawrence School recently took part in the Colchester Garden Festival Schools Gardening Project, and Year 3 rose to the challenge with creativity, imagination and a real sense of pride in their work.

The journey began back in the classroom, where pupils spent time researching and designing their own garden ideas. Their inspiration came after a very special visit from the Skinny Jean Gardener, who left the children full of excitement and enthusiasm for growing, designing and thinking differently about outdoor spaces. That visit sparked ideas that quickly grew into something much bigger.

With their imagination in full bloom, Year 3 carefully planned what their garden could look like, thinking about colour, nature, wildlife and how a small space can still have a big impact. Their ideas were full of care and creativity, showing just how powerful inspiration can be when children are given the opportunity to explore it.

A lucky group of pupils then had the incredible opportunity to take their ideas into the heart of Colchester town centre. Outside the Mercury Theatre, they helped set up their 1 metre by 1 metre garden display as part of the festival. Standing among other schools, each showcasing their own unique creations, the children became part of something truly special.

The morning was filled with excitement and admiration. Pupils moved from garden to garden, marvelling at the different designs, sharing ideas and celebrating each other’s hard work. There was a real sense of community and creativity as schools came together, each one contributing to a vibrant display of imagination and environmental thinking.

For Year 3, it was a moment of pride and achievement. Seeing their own ideas brought to life and displayed in such a public setting was unforgettable. It showed them that their voices and creativity matter, and that even the smallest spaces can be transformed with big thinking.

As the competition begins, we are incredibly proud of the Agents of Change garden and everything Year 3 has achieved so far. Their hard work, teamwork and enthusiasm have been inspiring to see.

Now, all that’s left to say is good luck — we are keeping our fingers firmly crossed and can’t wait to see what happens next.
