Incredible Agents of Change Junior Parkrun Takeover!

What an unforgettable morning! This weekend, the energy at Old Heath Recreation Ground was absolutely electric as children, families, and staff from across the Nexus Learning Partnership came together for a truly inspiring Agents of Change Junior Parkrun Takeover at Colchester Junior Parkrun.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that something special was happening. Smiles, excitement, nervous first-timers, and determined runners filled the park — and the sense of community spirit was impossible to miss.

Colchester Junior Parkrun previously held a course attendance record of 209 children. But thanks to the enthusiasm and support of our Nexus Learning Partnership schools, we didn’t just beat that record… We completely smashed it. A staggering 295 children completed the 2km course — running, jogging, walking, and skipping their way around with pride and determination. The atmosphere was full of cheers, encouragement, and celebration from start to finish.

And even more incredibly, we welcomed 123 first-time junior parkrunners, many of whom attended with friends, siblings, parents, carers, and family members. Some children even rushed straight from the event to other sporting commitments, which makes their effort and commitment even more impressive.

This wasn’t just about running — it was about belonging, supporting one another, and stepping outside comfort zones. Teachers gave up their Sunday morning to support pupils and families, and the encouragement on the course was amazing. Children cheered each other on, celebrated one another’s achievements, and showed exactly what it means to be part of a positive community. It was heart warming to see so many families taking part together and enjoying a healthy, uplifting start to their weekend.

This incredible takeover was a powerful example of what happens when schools unite around a shared purpose — supporting children not only in their learning, but in their confidence, wellbeing, and sense of community.

The Event Director of Colchester Junior Parkrun, Joe, was absolutely thrilled to welcome the Nexus Learning Partnership community. The team at junior parkrun created such a supportive environment, and it was fantastic to see children feeling proud of themselves as they crossed the finish line. We’re hopeful this takeover will inspire many of our pupils and families to return again.

This junior parkrun takeover captured everything Agents of Change stands for: community, wellbeing, positive action, and children believing in what they can achieve.
