Breathe, Let Go, Grow Strong: Year 4 Celebrate World Mental Health Day

Year 4 at St Lawrence School marked World Mental Health Day with a thoughtful and inspiring focus on looking after their minds as well as their bodies.

As part of their Agents of Change journey, the children began by exploring an important idea: what things in life can we control, and what things are outside of our control? Through discussion, reflection and sharing ideas, they started to understand that while we cannot control everything around us, we can choose how we respond and how we take care of ourselves.

From there, the class worked together to think of practical strategies to support positive mental health. Their ideas were fantastic, showing real maturity and emotional awareness. The children recognised that looking after our wellbeing is just as important as looking after our physical health, and they were eager to explore ways to put this into practice.

The day included a range of calming and creative activities designed to help the children pause, reset and reflect. One highlight was a gentle tapping session, helping pupils to relax and focus on the present moment. The atmosphere in the classroom became calm and peaceful as the children followed along and experienced how simple techniques can help manage feelings and reduce stress.

Music also played a big part in the day, giving children a chance to listen, unwind and enjoy a moment of quiet reflection. For many, it was a reminder of how powerful sound and rhythm can be in shifting mood and creating calm.

One of the most memorable activities took place outside, where pupils were given the chance to “let it go” by blowing bubbles into the open air. As the bubbles floated away, so did worries and tension, creating a visual and meaningful way for children to understand the importance of releasing stress and finding moments of lightness in their day.

Throughout the experience, Year 4 showed real understanding and empathy. They listened carefully, shared openly, and supported one another. It was clear that they are developing not only as learners, but as thoughtful individuals who understand the importance of mental wellbeing.

This celebration of World Mental Health Day reflects everything Agents of Change stands for: awareness, action and care for ourselves and others. Year 4 have shown that even simple activities can have a powerful impact when they are approached with intention and reflection.

We are incredibly proud of their insight, creativity and kindness. They have reminded us all that looking after our minds is not just important for one day, but something we can carry with us every day.
